GLOBAL TERRORISM WARNING
You should be aware of the risk
of indiscriminate terrorist attacks in
public places anywhere in the world. Be
vigilant, and take sensible precautions.
After
driving straight through Feydu and Maradu, two small
islands communities and several uninhabited islands
on the newly paved Link Road (Macadam highway) from
Gan, you come to the island capital of the atoll.
Feydhoo is a small island of about 3000 inhabitants.
The dusty roads and paths are surrounded by leafy
bushes, palm trees and tiny houses.
Unfortunately many of the young men leave Feydhoo
and seek jobs in the large tourist department as
gardeners, roomboys, waiters or these days even as
diveguides. Others go abroad to work as seamen.
The
flat beaches on Feydhoo are not perfectly suitable
for bathing because of tides and spiky shallow coral
blocks. But there is exceptional snorkelling here.
Truly remarkable are some sandbanks in the
north-west of the island. These banks are now
densely covered and the nature there is basically
untouched.
