Mifzal wins bid for Kaashidhoo resort

Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation revealed that 7 parties participated in the bidding of Kaashidhoo resort to developed after reclaiming a large part of the islands natural lagoon.
Tourism Ministry revealed this at the bid opening ceremony held at Nasandhura Palace Hotel on the 5 of this month. The bidding for the 200 bed resort opened on the 14th of April this year.
The Ministry said of 11 parties bought the bid documents of which 10 are private individuals and one private company. However when the dead line for submission of the bid proposals elapsed only but the time limit due to the dead line only six individuals and one company submitted documents.
The highest bidder was Mifzaal Ibrahim Didi of Galolhu Manaam, Male’ and his bid amounted to USD19, 750. Mifzal proposed to pay USD 16,000 for the first year and US $ 15,750 in the second year and an annual payment of USD 20,000 for the rest of the ten years.
Kaashidhoo, located in Kaafu Atoll has a large natural lagoon almost the size of the island. The island is sparsely populated. Apprximaetrly 20 hectors is to be reclaimed for the development of the resort.
The main occupation of the islanders is farming and the introduction of tourism is expected to improve the living standards of the people.

Maldives participates in Emirates Holidays Brochure Launch

Maldives participated in the Emirates Holidays Brochure Launch 2008 which took place at the Dubai’s Festival City Convention Center Hall from 2nd - 4th May 2008. Emirates Holidays, the tour operating arm of the Emirates Airline organized the event.
The purpose of the event is to provide consumers and travel agents in-depth knowledge of the destinations showcased in their brochure and familiarize with their staff. The destination Maldives information was given to the travel agents and the public. A total of 450 travel agents took part in the 3 day event. Emirates Airlines also operates 13 flights to the Maldives weekly.
Maldives is also among the top 10 destinations on the Emirates Holidays Network. Middle East is an emerging market to the Maldives. Last year the Maldives attracted over 6000 visitors from Middle East.

Expatriate worker in Addu atoll Villingilli dies in electrical accident

An expatriate man working at the construction site of the resort being developed at Addu atoll Villingilli died in of electric shock accident on Friday.
The resort being developed in Villingilli is the Shangri-La’s Villingilli Resort and Spa and the incident had occurred around 10:30am. The expatriate man who died was a Bangladeshi named Boruhan working for the sub-contractor Roof Constructions Group.
Police said that he had died when an iron pole had had been carrying had got entangled in the electric wires above him. Since he was on the ground and holding on to the pole when it had become electrocuted the shock had gone through him also. Police said that the doctors who had attended to him when he was taken to the hospital had said that Boruhan had died while en-route to the hospital.
Another Bangladeshi man was also electrocuted during the accident and has been admitted at the hospital. Officials at the hospital said that he was recovering. Arrangements have been made to transfer the body of the man who died to Male’.
A Police team was dispatched to the island to investigate the incident on Friday afternoon.
More than 1200 expatriate workers from 19 countries are working on the site of the Shangri-La’s resort due to open later this year.
