By whitetern | May 1, 2008
Germany’s Condor, one of the two airlines that bring tourists to the Seenu atoll Herathera Island Resort, has halted its scheduled Wednesday flights to Gan International Airport.
The Condor flights were organized by Thomas Cook through Universal Enterprises in Maldives and was stopped on 14 April, the Condor Station manager Abubakur Ali said on Wednesday.
“We halted the flights on the request of Thomas Cook,” he said. “Tourist arrivals are also less than before but we are ready to resume flights as soon as we receive notification from them. I am honestly very happy with the operation at Gan.”
The last Condor flight had touched down at Gan International Airport on 9 April, 2008.
Abubakur also said that Condor was scheduled to resume flights to Gan on 11 November this year. When asked about the situation, the Managing Director of MTDC Mohamed Solih said that he would have to talk at length if he was to comment on the situation and to call later when he had more free time.
Condor commenced its scheduled flights to Gan on 23rd January and 930 tourists have arrived in Maldives on Condor so far.
The MTDC had earlier said that they were planning to cut down on the number of tourist arrivals while the project to clean up the lagoon was ongoing. The resort had been plagued with murky lagoons and seaweed problems even from the beginning and the solution had been to separate the resort from the other half of the island. The Environment Ministry had given permission to go ahead with the cleanup project last month.
Currently there are 70 tourists in Herathera Island Resort which has 546-bed capacity.
Earlier, around the end of February, the Blue Panaroma flights from Italy had also stopped its flights due to low tourist bookings.
