5% increase in tourist arrivals in the first 3 months

Tourism Ministry has revealed that there has been a 5.1% increase in the number of tourist arrivals during the first three months of the year when compared to the number of arrivals during the same period last year.
According to the Ministry’s statistics number of arrivals from January to March this year reached 204,207. In 2007 during the same period 194,285 tourists came to Maldives. Ministry said that during the first three months of the year average occupancy rate of the resorts was maintained at 95.7%.
Ministry further said that in March this year there was a 13% increase in arrivals when compared to March last year. In March year 57,469 tourists came to Maldives.
Tourism Ministry forecasts an increase of arrivals by 5%. In this regard 711,711 tourist arrivals are forecasted for this year. Ministry revealed that considering the number of arrivals in the first 3 months of the year the forecasted target for the year would easily be achieved. However Ministry also noted that expected figure may not be achieved if the global increase in oil prices affects the economies of the country where the tourists arrive.
