Hereathera Resort opened for bidding
By KL | May 5, 2008
Maldives Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) has opened the bidding process for Herathera Island Resort after changing the lease period from 15 years to 20 years. The bidding process was opened at the main office of MTDC yesterday at 1300 hours.
When asked why the resort was going through a bidding process for the second time Media Official of MTDC replied that it was because the board decided to cancel the first round of bids. MTDC initially wanted to sublease the Resort to any qualified party for 15 years and invited bids last February. However due to substantial lack of interests possibly due to short lease period the corporation eventually decided to increase the lease period from 15 to 20 years last March.
Media Official informed that due to excessive growth sea weed and eventual dirtying of the lagoons and beaches of Herathera Island Resort work is currently under way to physically separate the Herathera and Hulhudhoo by dredging a channel. He however said it was difficult to say when the work would be completed.
Media Official further informed that Environment Ministry last March has approved the site where channel should be dredged.
Herathera Resort is the first resort opened in Addu Atoll. Situated in the southern most regions of Maldives, Herathera Resort is 4 kilometers long located on one end of 14 kilometer long island and is just 10 minutes from the Gan International Airport.
According to MTDC out of the 273 rooms developed in the resort, 153 are Beach Villas and 120 are Jacuzzi Beach Villas. Other main facilities in Herathera Island Resort includes two buffet style restaurants, one a la carte dinner restaurants, three bars with swimming pools, sports and recreation center, Dive and Water Sports Center, Spa , Twin Tennis Courts, Gym, various entertainment facilities, internet café, gift shops, Herathera Jewelers, banquet facilities and medical clinic.
