Maldives is considered
to be a world class surfing destination. It has been ranked as one of
the top 12 surfing locations in the world. It is also a magical and
beautiful tropical paradise with something for everyone. Surfing is
relatively new to the Maldives , when compared to the more established
activities such as scuba diving, so don't be surprised when you find you
have all the waves to yourself.
Increasingly the
Maldives tourism industry has recognised the popularity of the country
amongst surfers, and has in turn responded by developing accommodation,
surfing specific itineraries and annual surfing events to satisfy the
demand of this growing industry.
The Maldives tourism
industry continues to identify many new surfing destinations and has
developed quality resorts and surf live aboard cruise boats to cater for
surfers.

Surf Resorts |
|
North
Malé Atoll has the biggest concentration of resorts
and the most accessible, best-known, and most
popular breaks in the Maldives whereas South Malé
Atoll breaks are usually two feet smaller, but can
be outstanding if there's a big swell.
There are
fewer resorts in the south. Our surfing resort
recommendations are based upon the facilities
provided, activities offered and the quality of the
surfing site locations.

'Travel Wizard' on the home page to locate surfing
resorts together with a list of facilities and
services provided.

Surf
Tips
Dead corals
nearer to the shore are very sharp.
Booties are a necessity. Tides and
currents play an important role in
determining surfing conditions in
Maldives. All the breaks occur near
narrow channels of the atolls. Currents
through these channels can be very
strong.
During the
SW monsoon, currents flow outwards at
the eastern reef of the atolls where the
best surfs occur. Swell lines are
generally perfectly straight and clean
from the south-east (give or take 5 -7
degrees either side with different
swells). Most common surfing conditions
are two to four feet, clean, straight,
long and perfect.
A good
swell of five to eight feet is about 75%
to 85% likely in a two-week stay. Ten
feet waves occur on average three times
a year. All the waves hold pretty much
the same form in all tides. As tides
become bigger they are inclined to
become hollow.
